The US CPA syllabus for 2025-26 follows the CPA Evolution model. It includes three core sections: FAR, AUD, and REG. And one discipline section chosen from BAR, ISC, or TCP. The syllabus is designed to test accounting knowledge across different skill levels, from basic understanding to advanced analysis.
The US CPA exam consists of four sections in total. All candidates must complete three core sections: FAR, AUD, and REG and choose one discipline section from BAR, ISC, or TCP based on their career goals.
The FAR syllabus covers financial reporting under FASB, SEC, and AICPA frameworks. It includes topics like revenue recognition, leases, business combinations, government accounting, and financial statement items such as inventory, assets, and liabilities. It is considered the most content-heavy CPA section.
The choice of discipline depends on your career path. BAR is suited for finance and reporting roles, ISC for IT audit and cybersecurity roles, and TCP for tax-related careers. The decision should be based on long-term career alignment rather than perceived difficulty.
Yes, the CPA syllabus was updated under the CPA Evolution model in 2024. The earlier BEC section was replaced by three discipline sections: BAR, ISC, and TCP. All current CPA exams follow this updated structure.
Core sections: FAR, AUD, and REG are mandatory for all candidates and cover fundamental accounting, auditing, and taxation concepts. Discipline sections: BAR, ISC, or TCP allow candidates to specialise in a specific area based on their career goals.
The US CPA syllabus is manageable with the right preparation strategy. However, Indian candidates often find REG more challenging due to unfamiliar US tax laws. Other sections, especially FAR and AUD, are more aligned with accounting concepts already studied in commerce backgrounds.
You can download the latest US CPA syllabus PDF directly from this page using the “Download CPA Syllabus PDF” option. The PDF includes all sections, topic weightages, and structure based on the current CPA Evolution model.
FAR is generally considered the most difficult CPA section due to its extensive syllabus and detailed financial reporting concepts. It requires a strong understanding of accounting standards and significant study time compared to other sections.
The time required to cover the CPA syllabus varies by candidate, but most complete it within 6 to 12 months. Preparation time depends on prior knowledge, study consistency, and the order in which sections are attempted.
The CPA syllabus is more focused on US GAAP, auditing standards, and taxation, with an emphasis on application and analysis. Compared to CA or ACCA, which focus on Indian and UK tax laws and standards respectively. CPA exam process is shorter in duration but requires a strong conceptual understanding and exam-focused preparation
In FAR, financial reporting and accounting standards are heavily tested. AUD focuses on audit procedures and reporting. REG emphasises taxation. For disciplines, BAR tests analysis and reporting, ISC focuses on IT systems and controls, and TCP covers tax compliance and planning.
